  • The final exam for our class is Monday, May 2 at 8-10 am in our normal classroom. Review exercises and answer keys above!
  • Monday, May 2 is also the last day for any Module 9 late work, optional M9 composition rewrite (original instructions Expression écrite), or the optional last extra credit assignment (under Points bonus).

Activités en classe —

  • QuizI handed back the last quiz. I’ll drop the lowest 2 quiz scores for the semester. People did really well overall!
  • Expression écrite. I handed back the last composition. People wrote interesting compositions about the destinations they chose and general the grammar and vocab were pretty good, too.
    • Optional: you can do a second, corrected version and turn it in by Monday, May 2.
    • Late work. If you haven’t done the composition yet for Module 9, you can do it for late credit. Deadline: Monday, May 2.
  • Extra credit
    • Info here on a final extra credit assignment you can do to get bonus points
    • If you do it, it will replace a zero, or if you don’t have a zero, it will replace your lowest score where it will help your grade out the most.
  • iLrn
    • I apologize for the mistake on the settings for the final iLrn exercises. Some exercises did not give you sample answers after your first attempt.
    • I will give people full credit on those even if you made mistakes, as well as corrections as usual on any personalized answers or anything that you didn’t get completely correct.
    • Late work. If there are any iLrns you haven’t done yet  for Module 9, you can do it for late credit. Deadline: Monday, May 2.

  • I handed back the Quiz (Here’s a copy). Overall people did great on it! We’ll have one more before the end of the semester.

Comparaisons et Superlatifs —

  • Projecteur — Meilleur vs mieux (better), plus mauvais vs plus mal (worse).
    • We did this to help understand how to use which when
    • (le) meilleur et (le) plus mauvais go with adjectives, (le) mieux et (le) plus mal go with verbs
  • The Big Bang Theory — comparaisons et superlatifs
    • Groups wrote 2-3 comparisons, 2-3 superlatifs
    • For your reference, “Cheat sheet” for comparaisons/superlatifs from Wednesday’s class (Cheat sheet).
    • Both classes did a good job with these, with some interesting discussion and sentences!

• We also talked briefly again about le bac (the test at the end of high school that French students have to pass if they want to get into college, or retake the whole senior year again if they don’t pass) and the fact that the results of the bac are public record (here, for example).

• People in class felt it was weird to have test results public like that (and it’s illegal in the US to do this)
• The idea in France is that it’s a public test, so the records are public. That way, employers and universities can check easily to see who passed and whether they got a mention (did well/very well on the bac).

      • •having one hand above and the other below the table was traditionally considered rude in France, but no one’s sure why and most people don’t really care anymore about this rule.
      • asking for ketchup in a French restaurant might be seen as an insult (as if it doesn’t taste good enough on its own)
      • • usually you wait for everyone, including the host/hostess, to be served before you start eating in France.
      • •as we discussed, for many of these rules in the book, if you’re out with family or friends they won’t care much, but if you’re in a more formal situation, it would be good to know them.

Activités en cours — 

• Jacques Brel : p. 180-181

  • Jacques Brel : chanteur, auteur-compositeur des chansons
    • thèmes dans ces chansons : amour, liberté, solitude…
    • il attaque souvent le conformisme, la bourgeoisie…
  • He rebelled from his family, leaving the family business (usine/factory) to go off to sing. He came from humble beginnings and his songs were seen as subversive / rebellious since they made fun of the bourgeoisie and powers that be.
  • The protagonists in the songs are often “losers” — they don’t have money, the women they love are too « good » for them,
  • As we went along in the text, you answered several of the questions (Compréhension et intégretion, p. 181)
  • Musique : Madeleine, one of his best-known songs. (a slightly different version than we heard, with a cheesy video, is here. Here are the Paroles lyrics)
  • The music is definitely outdated, but it was very popular and typical of music from that period. (Like I mentioned, think Frank Sinatra in the US.).
  • you were able to catch parts of it. You did well as a class in understanding the text in the book and also the song, très bien!

Snow day — the university has been closed today due to the wintery weather. I’ve sent you an email with more information.

For Monday, please see the post below for what to do for next time (we’ll essentially have Friday’s class on Monday instead and gradually catch up). The iLrn assignment mentioned can either be done for Sunday night or will also be accepted Monday night.   • Please sign into our section of iLrn (instructions are on under the iLrn tab) before Friday
  • For Friday, continue with the course calendar,which lists what to read before each class.
  • Also for Friday, make sure before you check the Documents tab before you come to class (either Friday morning or Thursday after 9 pm) for any sheets you need to download or print out for the next class.
  • By Sunday night at 11:59 pm, do the first batch of iLrn exercises (when you go to the Assignment Calendar, click on “View by date” and click on next week to see which ones are do.) More info on how to sign up for/do iLrn here.
