WHAT WE DID TODAY IN CLASS (followed by homework and reminders)

p. 134, Rendez-vous au café. 

• Questions sur le vocabulaire
• Discussion of a few vocab words

• Rendez-vous = appointment, get-together, date (doesn’t have to be romantic)
• un demi = une bière [ un demi = 0,25 l ≈ 8,45 onces ≈ une demie pinte ]
• un rouge = un vin rouge
• un (vin) blanc
• une limonade = lemon-flavored soda
• un café crème = a coffee with cream
• French coffee is much stronger than American coffee, so if you go there be careful if you’re not a big coffee drinker!
• un thé (au) citron = tea with lemon
• un thé glacé = iced tea
• une infusion : herbal tea
• sweet tea doesn’t really exist in France (or the northern US for that matter!) — but you could say « un thé sucré » to give a general idea

p. 134, ex. 8 Individuel

• frais, fraîche = cool (related to the word « refreshment » in English)

p. 135 Commandons — Expressions utiles

• L’addition s’il vous plaît : Très important !! In France, they usually leave you alone to chat — giving you the bill would be like rushing you. If you don’t come out and ask for the check, you may wait a very long time!

• Four main uses
  • Emphase
  • Après «être» : C’est moi, C’est toi
  • Phrases incomplètes : Et moi? Toi aussi.
  • Après prépositions : Prepositions are connector words that indicate the relationship between nouns (spacial or figurative)
  • avec moi, chez toi, pour nous, etc.

Deux autres verbes importants quand vous êtes au café : boire et vendre

• p. 150. Verbe boire (irregular -re verb). Conjuguez. This is another irregular -re verb.
• p. 150, regular -re verbs (vendre, attendre, etc.)

• Répétez attendre
  • to wait for (in French, the « for » isn’t translated : J’attends le bus NOT pour le bus)
  • Conjuguez répondre
  • Note that the –d– IS kept in the plural for regular -re verbs, so it’s DIFFERENT from verbs like prendre (p. 149)
  • For prendre and verbs that end in prendre, there’s no -d- in the plural.
