Poverty As a Commodity

Living, or rather surviving, in the working-class, low-income side of Memphis is a struggle that is laced with hardship and stress. Many of the people who come from these areas work several jobs that pay far less than a living wage, so, even with all their effort, they are still unable to pay bills and take care of families.  The money that they are able to keep gets spent on necessities at other large companies that have the same fashion of a work force. Poor communities have a serious problem with divestment. The jobs created by large companies pay tiny wages that get sucked back into the company before the next pay period. Even worse, because of the PILOT program, these businesses, like FedEx, get huge tax breaks that seriously take away from the benefit of ever having the company in town in the first place. This allows companies to make a huge profit off the backs of economically disadvantaged people.

Sad thing is that the city government keeps letting large companies get tax breaks through the PILOT program making it far easier for the business to suck money out of the local economy. Once people spend money at Walmart, Home Depot, or any fast-food restaurant, that money is gone from the local economy to wherever that business stashes its money. None of it is invested in the local economy and job creation is a joke because they give people very little hours and pay far less than a living wage.  Without the tax money there is a lack of funds with which the government can create programs and institutions to fix problems that working class people face.

It could be use to fix the police pension problem or used to bolster education in the inner city. TCAP and EOC scores for students in the inner city are fare lower than those of kids in the municipalities, and more than 10 schools were closed last year. Poor educational programs lead to people, having a lack of skills, only being able to work low paying jobs, and they can never make enough to invest their money into something that will benefit the community. Lots of people in the working class work the same job all their lives, without a raise or promotion. Then their children come into the same cycle.

Many of the children of the people in the working-class have to live in a household run by stressed, and often single, parents. Having no programs in the community in which the kids can get involved leads them finding destructive ways to act out. By the time a lot of the young people of the community graduate from high school they have drug charges, theft or some violent crime charge. They are then rendered ineligible for employment. Those who didn’t commit crimes had better have great grades to go off to college or enroll in a trade school. If not they are hurled into the workforce with all of its atrocities.

Poor people are in this light a commodity for big business to use to build the dreams of its CEOs. The poverty is created by the money being funneled out of the community and dangling job opportunities in front of its members. They latch on because at least then they wont end up homeless, and they have an ounce of dignity purchased by the minimum wage.

  1. I grew up like this, but never knew it. My mom was a single parent, but had strong family ties. The greatest weapon we have against poverty is each other. When the buses were boycotted the community came together to make sure got where they needed to go. We have to do the same thing know, we have to stop waiting on the government to bail us out(that was for corporations) and come up with a community plan. Companies like FedEx and Walmart they make money off our individuals financial situations. Places like McDonald’s offer dollar menu that is affordable, but over time it increases your cholesterol and lowers your overall health, so now you have a doctor bill that is unaffordable, if you have insurance. It is not the rich keeping the rich in business it is the people who are constantly being given the crumbs while others get the whole loaf.

  2. I believe, poverty has become a cliché for people in my community. Every scheme that I have seen has come from getting money from the government, without working. Welfare, food stamps, and, money gram are a few schemes that African Americans rally together on. Tied with my subject, many people are impoverished, due to having children to n early. Unplanned parenthood adds to the struggle that impoverished people were already in. Unpaid child support carry, arrears, that already struggling people can’t afford. So a lot of people dig a financial whole that they never get out of. They never get out because they forget or simply cannot catch up. They end up living a life style they can’t afford, making their poverty a commodity.

    • Something I find interesting in your comment is how much the starting of a family or the family structure plays on poverty in our society. I think the amount of single parents and unplanned pregnancies and young parents have played a huge part on poverty. We have more people who are having to go to the government for finical assistance to provide for their family because they do not have the means to do so themselves. I think most people not all but most who plan for their pregnancies and plan out their families usually do not fall to such poverty. I think if as a society we did something more proactive about preventing unplanned pregnancies and teenage pregnancies then we could have less families seeking out government assistance.

      • Even if we reduce unplanned pregnancy, the wages are still too low. And i believe businesses should understand that sooner or later, dude’s gonna wanna make little dudes, and offer him or her a wage to make sure that happens smoothly. But asking businesses owners to be considerate and compassionate is asking way too much.

  3. Big Corporations are more focus on profits then the well being of the people. We point the finger at the Corporations saying its there fault when really it is own.The Corporations main goal was to never end poverty of to even help the people with job that make livable wages. The main goal is profit and poverty can be use to increase profits. The People have forgotten about the phrase, ” the power of the people.” We elect governors and political voices that do not speak for us. If people really want to blame something, blame the ignorance and lack of knowledge we posses about our own government.

  4. Companies should realize people are people, and therefore will sooner or later reproduce. Parenthood or pregnancy should be viewed as a factor of life, not an unsuspected burden. So companies should pay enough for people to take care of at least one child… Besides i don’t even think of these huge businesses as legítimate industries anyway.
