Succeeding in college is really much more about you as a student than it is about college. So the most important place to start is to consider why you’re here, what matters to you, and what you expect to get out it.
Even if you have already thought about these questions, it’s good to reaffirm your commitment to your plan as we begin to consider what’s really involved in being a college student. Consider the following factors that could limit your success:
Outside Sources
- Overemphasis on non academic activities
- Interference from outside sources: friends, family, spouse, children, etc.
- Frequent telephone calls during time set aside for studying
- Work Interruptions, scheduled or unscheduled
- Lack of adequate study facilities and conditions All course requirements shall be governed by the policies of the university.
Personal Challenges
- Poor mental or physical health
- Inadequate educational background Inability to express oneself in writing or orally
- Undiagnosed/diagnosed learning disability
- Financial difficulty
- Legal problems
- Crisis situations
- Unexpected change in life/lifestyle
Self-Management
- Unable to be flexible
- Sets time aside for everything but study
- Doesn’t keep a calendar/planner
- Unable to break overwhelming goals into small, attainable ones
- Attempting to do too many activities in too short of time
- Lack of sleep, fatigue
- Taking too many courses in one semester
- Procrastination, indecision, waiting too long to start
- Inability to say No
- Too many hours in social engagements
- Unsure how to schedule time efficiently
- Lack of objectives, priorities and deadlines
Academic Abilities & Interests
- Lack of proper study skills
- Personal disorganization
- Not attending classes
- Does not know learning style or when most productive study time is
- Poor note taking abilities
- Difficulty understanding course content
- Lack of proper motivation and incentive for major or specific courses
- Maturity to stick with study plans
- Lack of clear communication, instructions, and/or understanding about assignments
- Unsure of interests and/or fit with chosen major
