3. Understanding Course Tools

Audience: Prospective Students and Current UofM Students

Objective: Become familiar with the learning management tools you will use to communicate with your instructor, navigate the course, and complete assignments.

Content

Use the Content tool to access course materials, complete required activities, and monitor your completion progress on topics assigned by your instructor.

Communication

Classlist

To view a listing of your peers and instructor, select “Classlist” from the Communication group. The classlist tool allows you to view who is enrolled in your course, check users’ online statuses (a green dot will indicate if users are logged in to the overall system, not just the course), send email messages, view shared locker files, and read blogs if they have one associated with the course.

Email

From the Communication Group on the menu bar, click on “Classlist.” Click the checkbox next to the name of the person you want to email, then click the email (envelope) icon. Type a subject and message, then click “Send.”

TIP: On the first day of the semester, begin by logging in to your online course and sending your instructor an email inside of the course using the method described above.

Discussions

From the Communication Group on the menu bar, click “Discussions.” The discussions tool is a collaborative area to post, read, and reply to threads on assigned topics, share thoughts about course material, ask questions, share files, or work with your peers on assignments and homework.

Calendar

Once you enter a course, the events that the instructor has chosen to display in the calendar are available in your Calendar tool. To see course events, select the course. Then from the Communication group, select “Calendar.” This will “activate” the course calendar and show its available events.

Assessments

Quizzes

From the Evaluation group on the menu bar, select “Quizzes.” Use the Quizzes tool to take a quiz, review your quiz results, and see class statistics for a quiz.

Dropbox (Assignments)

From the Evaluation Group on the menu bar, click “Dropbox.” The Dropbox tool enables you to submit assignments within your web course by eliminating the process of mailing, faxing, or emailing your work to your instructor. Simply upload your submission to the appropriate Dropbox folder and submit before the assignment deadline.

Grades

From the Evaluation Group on the menu bar, click “Grades.” When your grades are published, they appear on your personal Grades page in the course. Depending on how your grades are set up, you might also be able to view comments and overall class performance statistics.
