ARE ONLINE COURSES DIFFERENT FROM ON-CAMPUS COURSES?

Just like on-ground courses, online courses at the University of Memphis are created and taught by dedicated faculty and instructors in each discipline and are attended by students who come from diverse backgrounds and locations. Online courses can benefit students by providing a flexible schedule for completing coursework and like courses taught on-ground the online courses have the same level of rigor. Students will be required to accept responsibility for learning and teaching within all courses taught at the University of Memphis.

WHO CAN TAKE AN ONLINE CLASS?

Online classes mirror on-ground courses in format (15 week, 10 week*, 7 week and 5 week*) of courses and schedule (Fall, Spring and Summer*). Courses are available to all students accepted and enrolled for the current academic semester. Students may be participating in online courses from around the world, or they may be trying to earn a college degree while raising a family or working full-time.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM ASSIGNMENTS AND DUE DATES?

Classes move together through a structured learning experience based on the instructor of record and the semester calendar.

Sample Structure: Typically, assignments for the week are included in the course syllabus/ schedule. Students will be granted a week or less to complete the assignments included in the schedule. Students can be expected to complete readings, brief problems, or review lecture materials.

In an effort to manage your time wisely in online course, you will be required to pace yourself and manage your own schedule. Even though the curriculum and schedule are flexible, students should not feel like they are alone or in an independent study program, as they learn course material and progress through the semester.

HOW DOES THE GRADES TOOL WORK?

Online courses offer quizzes and tests to help students assess their understanding of course material. Tests are offered for many classes online, but are not always graded automatically by a computer. Instructors will often evaluate responses in order to gauge a student’s understanding. The dynamic gradebook for your online course should coincide with the course syllabus and give you specific details on your current grade in the course.
