p. 194. Vocabulaire — Nous avons parlé de certains mots difficiles pour la prononciation ou le sens, par exemple

un œuf (prononce le “f”), des œufs (ne prononce pas le “f”)
des haricots verts (no liaison (z) before the h, it’s an exception!)
du raisin = grapes ; du raisin sec = raisins
de la viande generally refers just to beef. Other meats you’d call by their name – du poulet, du porc, etc.

p. 193, “On parle des repas”

Tableau : How to say « some » in French
- du pain : masculin ou féminin? (masc. sing.)
- de la confiture : masculin ou féminin? (fém. sing.)
- de l’eau minérale (sing. before a vowel or mute h)
- des céréales : sing ou pl? (pl.)
- je ne mange pas DE viande — pourquoi ? (négatif)
These are used with verbs like manger, boire, acheter, prendre, etc. — eating/drinking/buying SOME of something

p. 217, Structure 7.2. Articles (défini versus indéfini)

Rappel — for preference verbes (aimer, détester, préférer, etc.), use le, la, l’, le
Ça ne change pas au négatif : J’aime le saumon, Je n’aime pas le saumon.
Notice the difference:
- Je mange du bifteck (goes with the verb manger — EAT some steak)
- J’aime le bifteck (goes with the verb aimer: I LIKE steak [in general])
For now, you can generally assume
- if you’re talking about some of something and it goes with the verbs manger, boire, acheter, prendre, then you’ll use du / de la/ de l’/ des / de
- if you’re talking about liking/not liking something and it goes with the verbs aimer, détester, préférer, then you’ll use le / la / l’ /les
- if you’re talking about the specific thing (pass me the salt, the one that’s right there) then you’ll use le / la / l’ /les
There are exceptions to this and other verbs that use these structures, the meaning in context is what counts.
