“DIRTY SOUTH”

I’ve always wondered why Memphis was considered to be the “dirty south”! However, to my surprise I realized that the “the dirty south” also includes South and North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Texas, and Tennessee overall; not just Memphis.  The term “dirty south” is a term of endearment for the area of the United States that includes much of the former Confederacy.  Some people feel that “dirty south” is rap music that originated from the south.  It was said that music from the “dirty south” usually has a faster beat something you can dance to.  In 1990’s there was the “dirty south” rap that popped up and consisted of violent, sex-obsessed and naturally cuss oriented brand of modern hip-hop. The name dirty south is so popular that it inspired Dragan Roganovic to take it as his stage name. What does the “dirty south” mean to you?

  1. I find the term “the dirty South” extremely offensive and think it should not be permitted on the Internet. lots hops

    • My wife and I own dirty south trading co. We are officially opening the online commerce http://www.dirtysouthtradingpost.com. In 35 days. The term “dirty south” is from the farming and industrial significance of same as “red neck” we have contributed more to the sovereignty and wealth of , including the independence of the United States. We don’t see it as offensive at all. We are proud of the dirt under our nails on on our britches as by that labor we have contributed to our community and country. The Dirt in Dirty South is why we remain a people of prosperity. Dirty Hands, Clean Money. Proud Red-Necks born and raised in the Dirty Sound.

  2. Moved to the “Dirty South” from California less than two years ago. “Dirty South” secret: I would not have the quality of life that I have right now if I had stayed on the west coast. People as me if I miss California and I laugh. No desire to go back to the land of yearly “wildfire festivals”. No desire to go back to the land of constant drought restrictions. No desire to go back to the land of government thinking they can make better decisions on how to live my life than I can. I plan to be buried in the dirty south, it is now my home.

  3. Hmmm…. I didn’t know it was such a widely used term. In south (east) FL we mostly dropped the south and just the “Dirty Dirty” as I understand it, it’s probably something to do with the very influential rap culture, but it’s a clear way to differentiate this part of the region from the “South” although it’s the southern most state it’s largely populated with northerners and large Latin populations. This far south we weren’t part of the civil war. We don’t tolerate the confederate flag. We don’t want to be associated with that AT ALL.
Although locals mostly stick together and complain about the traffic from the snowbirds jamming up the highway.
We do welcome them as they are good for the economy.
And welcome those from anywhere of course as this is fabric it is made of.

  4. Like most things from the South, The Dirty South represents the very best and worst of what America has to offer. In the world of rap, with a few exceptions, it’s been bad. I blame it mostly for the dumbing down of hip-hop.

  5. Love me some DirtySouth!💜 S.C. FL…all of it. From the Southern Accent’s to the Southern Food, + La Misica🎶🎤🎵🎧🎹🥁🎸🎷🪘
