The Practice Phone Call

The Practice Phone Call

In my career I have noticed that many students are scared to talk on the telephone!  They would rather text someone that talk to them.

While it is good to ask companies if they are hiring people, it may not always be practical to get from business to business.  You might have to place a call on the telephone.

Before you do, it is important to be aware about the time you are calling.  For example, it is not a good idea to call food related companies during lunch time.

It is also a good idea to practice.  What are you going to say when someone answers the phone?  Who are you going to ask to speak to?

Another good tip is to smile while you are talking.  Stand in front of a mirror and watch when you are smiling.  There is a difference in the tone of your voice when you smile and it will come through on the other side!

Discussion Question:  In this section we talked about practicing a phone call to a potential employer.  A good way to practice is to make a list of answers to questions you are likely to be asked such as how old are you?  are you willing to work weekends?

Please prepare a discussion response that includes the name of the place you are calling, and what you would say when someone answers the phone.  I will play the part of the company.  Your job is to continue to respond to my questions.
