UofM Dance to present Falling/Up: A Faculty Dance Concert

The UofM Department of Theatre & Dance will present Falling/Up, an eight-part faculty and guest artist dance concert.

“We have eight choreographers involved: myself, Dance Professor Michael Medcalf, five adjunct professors, Christina McKinney, and Amy Miller, who is our guest artist for this event,” said Jill Guyton Nee, head of Dance with the Department of Theatre & Dance.

The film, which was choreographed and created by UofM alum Christina McKinney, is titled And I Am Here, features original music from two composers, one of which being renowned local singer-songwriter Julien Baker.

Seven live performances will  be held in addition to McKinney’s film, all of which are loosely themed around internal struggles.

Nee’s pieces, which includes 13 cast members and features costume design from graduate student Haley Grannon, tells the story of a red giant star moments before it crumbles into the ether. Other pieces focus on serious themes like domestic abuse and gun violence in schools, while guest artist Amy Miller’s work is centered around building bridges within the community.

Falling/Up will be shown at the Main Stage Theatre at The University of Memphis from Nov. 21 through the 23 at 7:30 p.m., with an additional showing on Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. for the High School Day of Dance recruiting event.
