The University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music is pleased to announce Jeremiah Frederick as the new assistant professor of horn.
Frederick is currently the second horn of the South Bend Symphony and a member of the Chicago Philharmonic and the IRIS Orchestra. He also serves as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Horn at the University Of Memphis’ Scheidt School of Music and as a regular substitute with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Jeremiah has played with other fine ensembles, including the Lyric Opera, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Grant Park, Elgin, Rockford and Omaha Symphonies, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Joffrey Ballet and the Philly Pops Orchestra in Philadelphia.

Scheidt School of Music. “He is a performer of superlative skill, with a wide range of performance experience, and excels in mentoring highly talented young musicians. I very much look forward to all he will bring to the School of Music as a teacher, performer, and colleague.”
Frederick enjoys new music performance and has played with contempo at the University of Chicago, Fulcrum Point New Music, and on the Chicago Symphony’s MusicNow series. Solo engagements have included performances of Schumann’s Concertpiece with the Fox Valley Symphony and South Bend Symphony, Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Jacob’s Concerto For Horn and Strings at Northwestern University. In October 2018, Frederick was the artist-in-residence for the Racine Symphony, giving numerous recitals and masterclasses in the community, culminating in a performance of Mozart’s Concerto No. 3 with the orchestra.
Frederick, an avid chamber musician, is a member of the Millar Brass Ensemble, Rona Quartet, and has played with the Chicago Chamber Musicians and Midsummer’s Music in Door County. He is also a founding member of Quintet Attacca, a wind quintet and winner of the 2002 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition’s Grand Prize. Following this honor, Quintet Attacca has toured extensively in the Midwest in addition to concerts in New York City and Italy. Quintet Attacca resides at The Music Institute of Chicago and was formerly with the Chicago Chamber Musicians’ Community Engagement Program.
Frederick is a frequent pit musician in Chicago. He has performed the pre-Broadway world premieres of Tootsie, The Addams Family and Big Fish. He has also performed with many Broadway in Chicago and local theater productions, including The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Shrek The Musical, Les Miserables, and Sunset Boulevard.
As a teacher, Frederick has maintained studios at the Music Institute of Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Elgin Community College, and Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. His students have gone on to receive numerous honors and many have gone on to study in some of the nation’s top music schools.
Jeremiah graduated from Northwestern University in 2000 with a master’s degree in horn performance and received his bachelor’s in performance from Lawrence University. His teachers have included Gail Williams, Bill Barnewitz, David Jolley, David Thompson, James DeCorsey and Dale Clevenger.
Recent Research and Creative Activity
- 2023 – Performed in Sondheim’s Into the Woods in a production at Paramount Theater in Aurora, IL.
- 2022-23 – Performed in the National Tour of The Lion King in Chicago from November 2022 to January 2023.
- 2022 – Performed live soundtracks to Ghostbusters and The Godfather with the Chicago Philharmonic
- 2022 – Performed alongside his UofM students in the Memphis Symphony’s side-by-side concert of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1
- 2022 – performed with Music of the Baroque in their presentation entitled “The Chevalier” about the life and music of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St. George
- 2022 – Performed with the National Tour of My Fair Lady for Broadway in Chicago
- 2022 – recorded two movements of Leo Schwartz’s new “Five Encores” for horn and piano as a collaboration with ‘Rona Quartet
- 2021 – served as a pre-screening judge for the wind division of the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition
- 2021 – Presented a virtual masterclass about being a successful freelance artist and teacher at Indiana University South Bend for music students
- 2021 – taught at Birch Creek Music Festival’s Adult Chamber Music Camp
- 2021 – performed with Barry Manilow on his holiday tour in Denver and Chicago
- 2021 – presented a presentation entitled “From Corona to ‘Rona: The journey of one horn quartet in and out of the pandemic” at the International Horn Society’s virtual convention
- 2021 – premiered seven new works for wind quintet by the Chicago Composers Consortium with Quintet Attacca
- 2020 – co-founded ‘Rona Quartet, a horn quartet, during the pandemic, presenting outdoor, socially-distance concerts
