Fatima Ferguson – Doctoral Student Highlight

Fatima.FThe Frederick Douglass Institute for Intercultural Research, at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, awarded Fatima Ferguson, a doctoral candidate in Instruction and Curriculum Leadership, the summer 2013 Douglass Scholars Fellowship. The Douglass Scholars Fellowship is designed to provide professional experiences, mentoring, and potential employment opportunities within a university that is strongly committed to cultural diversity.

As a Douglass Scholar Fellow, Fatima worked with the Philadelphia Urban Seminar Program, which is housed in the Department of Professional Studies. While in Philadelphia, Fatima worked with pre-service teachers by helping them to gain practical hands-on experience in inner-city classrooms with communities whose culture and race may have been different from their own. Fatima also worked with professors in providing community service experiences, valuable classroom experiences, and learning forums to pre-service teachers from surrounding universities in Pennsylvania.
