Identity is a very board topic full of multiple interpretations in the field of psychology and human development. Identity is a person’s conception of self and expression towards social relations that makes each person unique. Identity can have various forms of expression and concepts such as: self-concept, other’s perspective, personality, biological factors, psychological factors, and social factors. One of the most successful psychologists of identity was Sigmund Freud. Sigmund Freud’s Theory of Personality focused on the metal force of an individual to understand self-identity. The Theory of Personality broke the human psyche into three parts the id, ego, and superego. The id is best described as the libido. The id exists in the unconscious. The id is the part of personality that seeks pleasure by any means necessary. The ego simple deals with reality. The ego exists in both the unconscious and conscious. The ego takes both the ideals of the id and superego to compromise a solution. The superego is the force of morality. The superego exists in the conscious and part of the unconscious. The superego holds the morality of right and wrong. The superego helps make the best possible decision.

Sigmund Freud’s Theory of Personality helps me understand my self-identity. The id can be seen as the pleasure to want something very bad. For instance, I know I am supposed to study, learn, and focus on my school work to make the best possible grades. However, my id (bad self) persuades me into having fun, spending time with friends, and going out as much as possible. The id distracts me into my pleasures, and the id prevents me from doing the necessary things. The ego helps me make time for my pleasures and the right decisions. For instance, I decide to do my homework first before watching television. The superego (good self) puts my morality into play to make the best decision always. For example, I have fun reading, learning, and studying for certain subjects. I will sometimes decide to keep studying to get better grades instead of hanging out with my friends.

During my teaching career I have to understand that children will be building their identity. Students might be seeking pleasure (id) like having fun in school. Some students will be really morally understanding (superego). I have to get the student to comprimise to the ego identity so we can have lots of fun in class, but at the same time achieve high grades and accomplishments.
