I <3 Memphis - Kerry Williams

I have missed A LOT of day of class. I was really skeptical about the guest speaker. I really enjoyed myself. Kerry Williams is over the I <3 Memphis blog.

This blog is her baby. She created this blog from scratch. I found it very interesting how much time goes into blogging. Even though, she spends majority of her time NOT IN HER OFFICE. It sounds like a pretty easy, funny job. I’ve heard about this blog before just word of mouth. I never really just took time and look at it. Its really an interesting site. I love the idea of every week she post
‘5 Things to Do Around Memphis’ . I live in Memphis, and everyday I’m trying to find something to get into. She has this formula of how she picks it:
1. Big Thing
2. Kid Friendly – all ages can enjoy
3. Music
4. Something people wouldn’t normally do
5. Something she wants to do.

She uses this free site called Google Analytical Metrics. It measures everything on the site. How cool is this? Surprisingly a lot of her traffic comes from New York. She lost a lot traffic when Hurricane Sandy and because of the election.
A lot of her traffic comes from (in order):

1. Google Search
2. Twitter
3. Facebook
4. Direct Traffic
5. Changes from corporate

– She’s starting to she a lot of traffic coming from traffic.

She offered some tips about starting a blog ABSOLUTELY  no politics, crime , or cursing. Be honest about places, not rude. There is a difference.

Wikipedia Project

My topic was 90210.

It was very interested how many of the true fans of the former Beverly Hills: 90210 critique it. It was really hard to focus on 90210 without referring back to the original.

We love Wiki

Wikipedia was introduced to the world in 2003.
I like to think Wikipedia goes by the motto of history is changing, and the world needs to keep up.

Wikipedia has endless, affordable storage. Its easily accessible and gives those true fans, to show their urgency towards their likings. It was asked in class,

Do you think Wikipedia will ever end?

The answer is no. Wikipedia has reinvented the encyclopedia. Even the encyclopedia is trying to move into a more web base format but still lacks people updating and letting those true fans ‘spread their wings’- open participation.

Amateur vs Professional

What is a professional? What makes this person professional? Why does this professional superior vs someone who is consider an amateur?

What separates the amateurs and the professionals is someone with professional status (discussed in class) is paid, expert, training, considered best, experienced, more educated, very committed, well paid, and abide by a code/regulation.

Someone with the amateurs status can easily fit into our perception of “professionalism” even though our class defines an amateur with no credentials , not known / not recognizable, not able to make a living, its’ not their primary job.

Personally, I think different career paths can use the term professional or  amateur

Journalist SHOULD NOT CALL THEMSELVES A PROFESSIONAL OR AN AMATEUR.

MASS AMATEURIZATION  is happening, everyone is producing stuff. Everything is can be accessed.

Now.. being a doctor or maybe even a teacher.. yes.

Convergence Culture

Unfortunately, I was able to come to class today, but I am able to talk about the readings.

I’m not a really big Survivor fan so the readings for it kind of boring, but I did find it very interesting how the contestant are fined for releasing too much information and those TRUE FANS go through so much to get this information– with these blogs writing, using satellite photographs to release.

Also, Convergence Culture hit the nail on the head with American Idol. American Idol was something the world was used to but not all at once.

Introduction to ‘The Long Tail’

Media 2.0
I’m enjoying this class.
I found it really interesting how the long tail works.

98% of something sell at least once. When you look at the image above, the red shaded area is consider the popular era. Popular would be the hits, and the orange are would be the niches– everything else. I’m a Marketing student, and its amazing how the media sites/ online sites take advantage of this method. “Everyone uses the Long tail method” For instance, Amazon is the leading online store. You can buy anything from WAFFLE MAKERS to the mix used to make waffles. This store monitor the long tail within you. It recommends things as you buy it, and also tells you with similar interest.

I know this is very much off of topic but I love the idea of expressing myself. It gives me the opportunity to express what I learn and what I found interesting. Unlike, the typical class where you have a discussion board, and the professor TELLS you what you should have found interesting with a topic question.
Oh yeah.. I cannot find in the settings how to unblock the author but..
