2022 School of Music Awards

Exceptional Teaching Award – Dr. Alandis Brassel

This award was established to recognize an outstanding faculty member who has exhibited generous and uncommon dedication toward academic excellence and individual student development and has far exceeded expectations for this academic year.

 

 

Marcie Richardson Staff Recognition Award- Theresa Winkelman 

This award is given in memory of our very own Marcie Richardson, who served on the School of Music staff for 15 years. This award recognizes the hard work and dedication of a staff employee at the School of Music who has exceeded expectations this school year.

 

 

 

College of Communication and Fine Arts Dean’s Academic Award – Daniel Ward

This award is presented to the undergraduate student with the highest GPA for the year within the College of Communication and Fine Arts.

 

 

 

 

Presser Foundation Scholarship – Olivia Remak

This is the School of Music’s most prestigious award and is given to an outstanding music major who will be a senior next year. This award recognizes someone who combines excellence in their major with a strong record of academic achievement and contribution to the School of Music.

 

 

 

 

Graduate Document Award – Robert Warren Apple

This award is given to the School of Music student whose dissertation or thesis is judged the most outstanding by a faculty panel. This year’s winning document is entitled “The Music Composed for the Keyed Trumpet.” Warren Apple has also received a Fullbright Scholarship.

 

 

 

 

Charlie Rich Scholarship- Sir Latimore Wilson 

Established by the family of Memphis music hall of Famer, Charlie Rich, a multi-talented, Grammy winner, singer, songwriter, and musician this scholarship recognizes an outstanding music major.

Douglas C. Lemmon Memorial Scholarship- Colin Woods

This scholarship is given by friends, colleagues and family, in memory of Douglas C. Lemmon, former professor of trombone at the University of Memphis.

 

 

 

 

Dr. Barbara Mashburn Choral Scholarship- Ethan Smith

This scholarship was established to assist students who desire careers in choral music education. Mashburn is a retired choral music teacher and an alumna of the University of Memphis.

 

 

 

 

Dr. Charles Schulz Scholarship- Leo Andrews

This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding tuba student in honor of professor emeritus Dr. Charles A. Schulz who served as head of the brass division.

 

 

 

 

Dr. Sidney J. McKay Fellowship Award – Jose Wilker Augusto da Silva

This award recognizes an outstanding graduate student with a focus in instrumental music education. McKay was a former University of Memphis bands director and served on faculty for 28 years.

 

 

 

 

 

Early Music Award- John Cox

This award recognizes a graduating senior who best exemplifies the spirit and practice of historical performance.

 

Elba Gandy Memorial Music Scholarship- Elizabeth Betrous, Grace Leonard, Everlin Roark, Joshua Shephard

Donated by Ellen Davies-Rogers in memory of Elba Gandy, this scholarship is presented to outstanding music students.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Elvis Pressley Endowed Scholarship – Samantha Long

This scholarship recognizes an academically outstanding and financially deserving music student. Elvis is known globally as the king of rock-n-roll, but his philanthropic side was legendary in the Memphis community.

 

 

 

 

Ethel Taylor Maxwell Vocal Scholarship- Lindsay Reeves

Given in honor of Professor Emerita Ethel Taylor Maxwell who taught for 35 years as a professor of voice, this scholarship was created to recognize outstanding music students majoring in voice.

 

 

 

 

Herbert Hermann Memorial Scholarship – Nohelia Gomez

Given in memory of former faculty member Herbert Herman, this award recognizes an outstanding student studying keyboard.

 

James and Christopher Gholson Scholarship Award- Onyinye Igboanugo

This award recognizes an outstanding student in the woodwind area or music business. James Gholson is a retired school of music Professor of Clarinet, and his son Christopher is a School of Music alumnus working as a record producer – also known as Drumma Boy.

 

 

 

James R. Holbcomb Music Education Scholarship- Matthew Hammons

This award recognizes an outstanding music education student. As the former Director of Performing Arts for Memphis Shelby County schools, Holcomb knows the value of supporting the arts and the students who pursue them.

 

 

 

 

Jerry Lee Lewis Endowed Scholarship Award- Franko Coleman

This award is given to an outstanding student enrolled in Jazz Studies pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree. This award is given in honor of Lewis, an iconic singer, songwriter, and pianist.

 

 

 

 

Jim Green and Tag Hedges Graduate Fellowship- William Whitt

This fellowship was established by the Hedges family to recognize an outstanding graduate student pursuing band conducting or instrumental music education.

 

 

 

 

Joe D’Gerolamo Memorial Scholarship – Evann Velasquez

This award was established in honor of Joe D’Gerolamo, a former faculty member in Jazz, and is given to an outstanding student enrolled in Jazz Studies.

 

 

 

 

John and Shelly Baur Prize- Christopher Divincenzo

This award was established to recognize an outstanding composition student. John Baur was a former professor of theory and composition at School of Music. This is the first year this award has been awarded.

 

 

 

 

 

Lily Afshar Guitar Scholarship – Andrew Manka

Named in honor of Dr. Lily Afhsar, professor of Guitar and recognizes an outstanding student in guitar.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lubrani Clarinet Award/ Memorial Fund Scholarship -Ian Greer

Established in memory of former faculty member, Frederick Lubrani, professor of clarinet.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Memphis Gridiron Show’s Berl Olswanger Scholarship – Carmen Gonzalez

Given in memory of Berl Olswanger by the Memphis Gridiron Club, Olswanger was known as “Mr. Music of Memphis” and hosted a radio program on WMC. This award recognizes an outstanding undergraduate music major.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Noel A. Gilbert Violin Scholarship – Maria Sofia Alvarado

Established to honor former violin faculty member, Noel A. Gilbert’s passion for teaching,  the award recognizes an outstanding student majoring in violin performance.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Patricia Ann Fisher Music Education Scholarship – Emily Cooley

This award was given in memory of Patricia Ann Fisher and was created to support an outstanding student majoring in choral music education.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Paul B. Eaheart Scholarship in Flute – Micayla Scott

This award was established in honor of former Professor of Music Paul Eaheart and aims to recognize an outstanding flutist.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Robert Kelley Memorial Scholarship – Alexandria Brown

This scholarship is given in memory of Robert “Bob” Kelley, founder of Mid-South Concerts, and recognizes an outstanding music business student.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sam Phillips Scholarship- Trinity Miller

Established by his family and friends to recognize the creative achievements of rock and roll pioneer Sam Phillips, the scholarship is awarded to an outstanding music engineering major. Founder of Sun Studios, Phillips discovered genres and launched legends like Elvis Presley and B.B. King.

 

 

 

 

 

Shirley W McRae Music Education Scholarship – Tiffany Pinnix

This scholarship was established to recognize and assist an outstanding student who desires a career in elementary music education. McRae is Professor Emerita at the School of Music, where she taught for 25 years.

 

 

 

 

 

Smit Music Composition Award- Adam Benefield

Given in memory of Johannes Smit, former Professor of Composition at the University of Memphis, the award recognizes an outstanding composition student.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Truist Scholarship Fund- Brody Melton, Rylee McIntyre, Mark Allen

Truist’s purpose is to inspire and build better lives and communities. Through the Truist Scholarship Fund they are able to make a positive impact on the communities where we live and work.
