The Salons Project contains data on 137 informal literary circles like salons, cénacles, book clubs, and bibliophile societies. Of these 137 documented gatherings 43 are salons, that is–female-led discussion groups held in private homes. The male-led groups were more diverse in terms of where they met but were more likely to be segregated by class, gender, artistic movement, and political orientation that the more diverse salons.
