Applying to Graduate in Summer or Fall 2015 or Spring 2016

Students in the College of Arts and Sciences should apply to graduate at the beginning of the semester a year before their expected graduation date, for example, in January 2015 for graduation in Spring 2016.

  • If you plan to graduate in August or December 2015 or May 2016 and have not applied, you should apply NOW by going to myMemphis, the My Degree tab, and the Commencement and Graduation channel.

Filing your intent is free and takes only a few minutes.

The University’s absolute deadline to apply to graduate in August 2015 is April 8, 2015, and our college does not allow exceptions to this deadline.

  • If you have applied for August or December 2015 or May 2016, please realize that it will take about a couple of months to receive a summary because they are completed in the order in which your application was received.

  • If you applied to graduate in August or December 2015, or May 2016, and now realize you won’t be able to graduate until a later semester, please send me an e-mail telling me your new expected graduation term.

If you have any questions, I will be happy to help.

Advising for Summer and Fall 2015

Advising for Summer and Fall 2015 Classes

  • All undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to meet with their advisor prior to registration for classes for Summer and Fall 2015.
  • If your advisor has sent you information about making appointments, please follow those instructions.
  • Otherwise, please check the document at this link for details of how and when to make an appointment with our Arts and Sciences advisors: http://www.memphis.edu/cas/docs/advis_av_summer-fall2015.doc

  • UM-Lambuth students will be advised on the Lambuth campus.
  • You can locate your advisor’s name through the Academic Advising and Planning channel on the Student tab on your myMemphis portal.
  • If your advisor is not listed in myMemphis and you do not know who it is, please check Finding Your Advisor.
  • If you need assistance determining who your advisor is, please e-mail me.

  • Your advisor may ask you to check the degree evaluation, UMdegree, available on the Student tab in your myMemphis portal before your meeting, or to create a list of possible courses in the Planner section.

  • Your advisor may have given you a degree sheet to use for posting your classes.  Be sure to update it with the courses you are enrolled in this semester and take it to your meeting.  If your advisor did not give you a degree sheet, use the appropriate version of one of our degree sheets (based on the Undergraduate Catalog you are under) to post your completed coursework: http://www.memphis.edu/cas/degree_sheets.htm

  • Registration begins April 6 based on classification (Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and then Freshmen). For the best chance of creating an ideal schedule, you should set up an advising appointment in the next few weeks so that you will be ready for your first opportunity to register.  Check the Summer and Fall 2015 schedules for the exact dates: http://www.memphis.edu/registrar/calendars/semester.htm

  • Seeing your advisor early will ensure that you can get an appointment before time to register.  Those who wait until April to schedule an appointment may not be able to see their advisor until after their first opportunity to register.

  • Many advisors are not as available in the summer due to other commitments, so please go ahead and see your advisor during the next few weeks and register for classes on time.

  • You might want to use the Advising and Registration Worksheet on this page to prepare a schedule to propose to your advisor:

http://www.memphis.edu/cas/docs/reg_worksheet.doc

  • The “Schedule of Classes” for Summer and Fall 2015 and “Look-Up Classes” in myMemphis are available for students to view, but there may still be some changes made.

Fund for American Studies – Academic Internship

The Fund for American Studies sponsors semester and summer LIVE. LEARN. INTERN.  academic internship programs based in Washington, DC. Each program includes courses for transferable credit from George Mason University, a guaranteed internship placement, furnished housing on George Washington University’s downtown campus, a variety of guest lectures and briefings, as well as opportunities for professional development and networking. Classes, internships and other program components are specific to the institute’s subject matter.

TFAS has a $4,000 scholarship from a University of Memphis alumnus to award to a current Memphis undergraduate.  The remaining cost to be paid by the student would be $2,995 for the six credit option or $4,495 for the nine credit option (this includes tuition and housing).  A University of Memphis student has taken advantage of this annually for the past decade.  There are prerequisites for certain programs and the alum would prefer the student be returning to campus to be involved as a campus leader.  Please let Meta Laabs mlaabs@memphis.edu or 901-678-5271 know of your possible interest by  February  18 and we will meet soon thereafter to discuss the details and next steps.  I can also connect you with past program participants.  The final application deadline is early March.

Preference will be given to rising sophomores and juniors who can bring their experience back and impact our campus.
