Oct. 1, 2025 ̶ ̶ The University of Memphis has once again been recognized as a top institution for military-connected students, earning the Military Friendly Gold designation and also, for the first time, the Military Friendly Spouse School designation. Military Friendly is regarded as the benchmark for evaluating how higher education institutions, employers and organizations serve the military community.
“Achieving Military Friendly Gold and, for the first time, the Military Friendly Spouse designation reflects the intentional work we’ve done to build a culture of belonging, provide robust resources and ensure military-affiliated students can thrive,” said Chris Bourque, director of Veterans and Military Student Support. “This recognition affirms that the UofM is one of the best places in the nation for military-connected students to pursue their education and achieve their goals.”
The “Gold” designation places UofM among the most military–friendly institutions in the nation. The status is awarded to those who not only meet but also exceed national standards in categories such as academic policies, student support, retention, financial aid, culture, commitment and career services. It reflects that the University provides exceptional support for military-affiliated students in areas that directly impact student success and belonging.
The newly awarded Spouse designation recognizes the University’s growing commitment to military families, with expanded outreach, family-friendly programming and services designed to support the unique academic and career challenges of military spouses.
“The University of Memphis is deeply committed to supporting not only our veterans and service members but also their families,” Bourque said.
The UofM’s Veterans and Military Student Services (VMSS) office leads these efforts, connecting students and families to academic, financial and community resources while fostering an inclusive campus environment for military-affiliated populations.
