UofM Student Affairs Welcomes New Leaders

The Division of Student Affairs at the University of Memphis has named two new key members to its leadership team — Dr. Antwone Cameron has been named Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students effective Sept. 1 and Dr. Ryan-Jasen “Ryan” Henne has been named Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement effective Aug. 18.

“We are fortunate to have two, seasoned professionals join us with a commitment to student support and creating a robust student experience at the UofM. Both Dr. Cameron and Dr. Henne bring a depth and breadth of knowledge that will provide leadership in supporting a successful outcome for every student,” said Melinda Carlson, Vice President for Student Affairs.   

Antwone Cameron

Cameron is an accomplished and student-centered higher education leader with a proven track record of advocacy, innovation and impact. A proud first-generation college graduate, Cameron has served as dean of students at two institutions, where he led with a deep commitment to access and student success.

His doctoral research examined the intersection of food insecurity, academic achievement, and students’ sense of belonging — work that informed the creation of food pantries on both campuses he served, ensuring essential resources for hundreds of students.

 

Cameron is a national presenter on topics such as change management and the transformative role basic needs support plays in student retention and holistic development.

With a leadership style rooted in empathy and intentional engagement, he is known for building strong relationships with students, empowering teams and advancing campus-wide initiatives. His dedication to the student experience and collaborative approach make him a dynamic addition to the University of Memphis.

The AVP and Dean of Students provides leadership for the Office of Student Accountability, Case Management, University Student Health and Wellness Services, the Office of the Dean of Students, which includes crisis management, Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), student basic needs and the Tiger Pantry.

Henne is a seasoned higher education leader with over 25 years of experience dedicated to advancing student engagement and success. He has served as a senior student affairs administrator, where he leads strategic initiatives that foster belonging, academic achievement and holistic development.

Throughout his career, Henne has held progressive leadership roles at a variety of institutions, including community colleges, private liberal arts institutions, and large and mid-size public universities.

He has successfully led cross-functional teams through major institutional transitions and strategic planning processes, consistently centering student voice in institutional decision-making.

 

Ryan Henne

Active in regional and national professional organizations, Henne has presented at conferences and served on advisory boards for NASPA, ACPA, ACUI, and ACUHO-I. He is also a committed mentor to emerging professionals in the field. Deeply rooted in values of authenticity, integrity and community, Henne believes in the power of higher education to transform lives. His work continues to focus on building dynamic campus cultures where all students are seen, supported and empowered to thrive.

The AVP for Student Engagement provides leadership for the following units, Veteran and Military Student Support, Office of First Generation Student Success, Student Leadership and Involvement, Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism and Multicultural Affairs.
