Hooks Institute Student Success Program Awarded Grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis

Feb. 21, 2025 — On Jan. 13, the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis was awarded a Capacity Building grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis in support of the Hooks Academic Achievement and Mentoring Initiative (HAAMI). The award, provided by FOREVER Funds at the Community Foundation, will provide in-depth program evaluation services of the HAAMI program as it enters its 10th year. The evaluation will provide critical data to assist the Hooks Institute in strategic planning for the program as it continues to serve students at the University of Memphis.

Hooks Institute Executive Director Daphene R. McFerren said,Led by HAAMI Director Rorie Trammel, this initiative has helped many Memphis-area male students graduate and advance professionally. A grant from the Community Foundation enables an external review to showcase HAAMI’s impact and attract donor and grant support.”

HAAMI focuses on enriching the collegiate experience and improving graduation outcomes for African American undergraduate male students at the University of Memphis. The program’s pillars are academic achievement, personal development and career readiness.

The Benjamin L. Hooks Institute implements its mission of teaching, studying and promoting civil rights and social change through research, education and direct intervention programs. Institute programs include community outreach; funding faculty research initiatives on community issues; implementing community service projects; hosting conferences, symposiums, and lectures; and promoting local and national scholarship on civil and human rights. The Hooks Institute is an interdisciplinary center at the University of Memphis. Contributed revenue for the Hooks Institute, including funding from individuals, corporations, and foundations, is administered through the University of Memphis Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.
