Southwest Tennessee Community College will present Dr. Beverly Bond with the Carter G. Woodson Award of Merit. According to their website, the school created the award in 1988 to “recognize individuals, groups, or agencies who have contributed to, preserved, or promoted the African-American experience and who support Dr. Woodson’s legacy of “historical accuracy through inclusion.” As part of her acceptance speech, Dr. Bond will talk about the Memphis Massacre of 1866 and its historical ramifications.
Dr. Bond is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Memphis and the Co-Director of the Memories of a Massacre Project. The event will take place on February 16, 2016 at 11:00am at the school’s Union Campus in the Vertis Sails Gymnasium.
