The Journalism and Strategic Media Alumni Association recognized four alumni, one student and two faculty members at its annual Outstanding Alumni Awards dinner on Oct. 10 at the Penny Hardaway Athletic Hall of Fame.
The event attracted about 150 people, many of whom were known for their contributions to the University and the industry.
Recognized were:
Patricia Pennington, Herbert Lee Williams award
“Winning this was a total surprise. I just want to say thank you so much. (The Pennington award) is a great way for us to give back and gives us an opportunity to remember my husband, and pass some goodness along to the place that gave him his fabulous career. It’s up to us to do something and make people’s lives better. If only he can look down and see how this award is working to help people and how we are giving back.”
Ashley M. Schaller, emerging media professional
“I have been really humbled to find out I was getting the award. I have been so thankful to everyone who has been so supportive these past four years and I know I will make you guys proud in the future too.”
Courtney Ellett, young alumnus award and 1997 graduate
“I’m certainly humbled by it since this is my hometown and my alma mater. It’s special to get an honor from a place that schooled you. A special thanks to Dr. (David) Arant and Candy Justice.”
Florence McAtee Howard, Charles E. Thornton award and 1974 and 1999 graduate
“It makes me feel really good to get an award from a department where I got two degrees from so long ago. It’s nice seeing Dr. Arant and Dr. (Sandra) Utt and to be recognized and remembered.”
George Larrimore, Charles E. Thornton award and 1976 graduate
“I went to school here a long time ago, and it’s a real honor to be remembered. I was really surprised to hear I had gotten the award and I want to thank the alumni club for this award.”
