School Survival Guide: Safety Tips for Campus

With all of the controversy on campus between students, the community and administration; we want to make sure students are aware of ways to stay safe on campus. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

1. Get Familiar

Become familiar with the tools and resources that are available for UofM students.

  • Blue light emergency phone stations are located around campus. By pressing the button in an emergency, police services will arrive quickly.
  • Never walk on campus alone at night, Tiger Escort services start every night during the week at 6 p.m.  These guys will pick you up on a go-cart and take you to your car, dorm or anywhere else on campus. They will even walk with you in the rain with an umbrella if the carts are not working. Just call 1-800-HOME .
  • Maps around campus will show you where you are and where the emergency lights are located on campus.
  • Download our Safety App: LiveSafe

2. Don’t “Send Me Your Location”

Although dorm rooms have access cards instead of keys, students that live in apartment style housing should always remember to lock your doors when you’re home and before you leave.

Also, make sure to turn off your location on Snapchat, Facebook and other social media platforms that may give strangers unwanted access to your location.

3. STAY WOKE

Always keep up with crimes on campus and in the community because being knowledgeable about them can provide you insight on how to prevent similar incidents from happening to you.
