Have Asthma? You Likely Have an Allergy as Well

Epidemics in the United States are typically thought to be something very detrimental such as flues and viruses, but have you thought about asthma as being an epidemic? The number of patients that are diagnosed with asthma is on the rise every year. Researchers say that there is a correlation between having asthma and allergies. Currently in America, it is estimated that there are 26 million cases of asthma and 50 million cases of allergies. They are both serious diseases that can occur at any age in life.

The link between the people with asthma and allergies is being studied. Currently, the results show that 75% of asthmatic individuals between 20-40 years of age and 65% of individuals over the age of 55 have been diagnosed with asthma and have at least one allergy.

In the study there were 2,573 adults who were tested against a panel of 19 allergens that were popular to determine an allergy in an asthmatic individual. The number of children with asthma is higher than that of adults because the adult cases usually are undiagnosed. Normally the adult’s condition is a result of something else that typically occurs with elderly people, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema.

Further research suggested that poor hygiene increases the chance of infections, climate such as the change in temperature and promoting the growth of various weeds and plants that releases pollen, and under education of the severity and symptoms of asthma can be factors leading to the new epidemic—asthma.

Listening to Blood Cells

Given today’s excelling technology and the never-ending advances, it is no surprise that medical findings and research have come up with new ways to detect diseases that are related to blood.

Researchers and studies have shown that simple blood conditions can be detected by sound waves. These waves are produced within the body when they are struck by laser lights. With this advancement there is now a way to find out the shapes and also the sizes of blood cells. This new finding could be carried out by healthcare professionals to diagnosis patients with conditions in the blood because this new way takes only seconds for feedback.

Researchers in the article stated that their plan is to produce instruments that will allow these detections and make fast diagnosis and therefore provide faster treatment. Studies and results shown in the article concluded that shapes other than that bi-concave shape has a list of reasons why the abnormal shape occurs.

Researchers that carried out the study used the instrument called a photoacoustic microscope to detect sound. They carried out this experiment using a minimal amount of blood cells of about 20. This was just enough to give back readings that they were expecting—different sounds!

In closing, they leave with saying that their next big technological advancement is to eventually use a microfluidic device. They will continue to use the current ways of lasers, but will now incorporate the use of probes. With this simple incorporation, healthcare providers can test thousands instead of testing just blood samples. Their hope is to eventually get this method working effectively and then broaden this and check individual’s white blood cells.

Hyperthyroidism Linked to Heart Failure

Hyperthyroidism is caused when the thyroid is overactive—producing too much of the hormone thyroxine, causing normal body functions, such as metabolism to speed up. Recent research suggests that hyperthyroidism may have a tremendous affect on the most important organs in your body, your heart. In recent studies, researchers have found a correlation between hyperthyroidism and atrial fibrillation. They put together that atrial fibrillation is a common outcome of hyperthyroidism. Atrial fibrillation, commonly called “A fib” is characterized by uncoordinated contractions of the atria in the heart and can result in a fast and irregular heart rhythm. Hypothyroidism and the affect on the heart is still to be researched further.

Previous research has shown that hyperthyroidism is more prevalent in the female population than the male population, and age is not a risk factor. More recently, a team of researchers carried out a study in Denmark where they collected thyroid function blood tests from 586,460 patients with hyperthyroidism that consulted their practitioners. They followed these patients for a span of 10 years. After five years, the data suggested that, out of 586,460 participants, over half of the women in the study had developed A fib.

Researchers suggested that there should be a higher watch on this topic to make this situation more publicized so people can become more aware of hyperthyroidism and the underlying threat of developing A fib. People can take better control over major health conditions by regular physician check-ups, eating and maintaining a healthy diet, exercise, and most importantly avoid smoking and alcohol. These simple tasks will keep you, your heart and body healthy longer, for a better you!

            There are a number of compounds that can obstruct endocrine system pathways and cause harmful effects on the human body. These chemicals are known as endocrine disruptors, substances that may mimic or interfere with the function of hormones in the body. These compounds are also known as “endocrine modulators, environmental hormones and endocrine active compounds.” We are unknowingly exposed to these compounds in our daily life in the form of plastic products, makeup, canned food, detergent and pesticides/herbicides.

Endocrine disruptors work by three different mechanisms. They can imitate endocrine hormones (thyroid and sex hormone) and trigger their effects. Endocrine disruptors attach to receptors inside the target cells and obstruct the naturally occurring hormones from attaching. In this way, the signal is not produced and the body is not able to react correctly. Endocrine disruptors also can obstruct or control the pathway by which endocrine hormones are made. They affect at low concentrations and cause a variety of diseases. Some studies show that they decrease fertility and increase progression of diseases.

People are exposed to endocrine disruptors through the mouth, skin and respiratory tract. Some of these chemical such as dioxins, DDT and polychlorinated biphenyls are extremely persistent and decompose gradually. They are broadly distributed in our surroundings. Kids are at a higher risk from exposure to endocrine disruptors because they are generally more susceptible than adults. The endocrine system is responsible for development of body and it is adversely affected by the disruptor. To decrease the hazard from disruptors we can take some precautions from our side, such as reduce use of pesticides, use organic foods, do not use plastic containers or wraps to store foods, and do not provide your child with soft plastics toys etc.

Early Sign of Alzheimer’s Reversed in Lab

Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and eventually even the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. There are three stages to the disease, mild, moderate, and severe. Currently there isn’t any cure for the disease and symptoms tend to worsen as the years progress and the individual moves into the later stages.

During a study, researchers used mouse models to test a protein, amyloid beta, to see how the loss of smell occurs in the brain. They found a tiny amount of amyloid beta causes smell loss in mouse models. In the beginning, the olfactory bulb, which receives input about odors detected by the nasal cavity, became hyperactive. Over years, amyloid beta increased inside the bulb and the more hypoactive the bulb became. Despite the longer period of sniffing, the mice were unable to remember smells and incapable of differentiating between odors. Same as in humans, as mice age they lose their sense of smell. To show a reverse of effects, researches then gave the mouse a synthetic liver x-receptor agonist, which is a drug that clears the protein, amyloid beta, from the brain. The mice were able to distinguish different smells again within two weeks. However, after one week of withdrawal, symptoms returned yet again.

Alzheimer’s disease not only affects the individual, but it also affects every person who plays a role in that individual’s life. With the findings and discovery, hopefully a cure for the disease will soon be made available. A cure will be greatly needed since studies show by 2050 Alzheimer’s disease is expected to triple to 16 million.

Childhood Obesity and Taste Buds

Taste is something that most people don’t even think about experiencing in daily life other than after a delicious meal or, inversely, a terrible meal.  However, it is a complex system that is accomplished through the use of taste buds.  These taste buds allow us to taste five primary flavors: sweet, bitter, salty, sour, and umami, with umami tasting like meat.  Although we can taste all of these flavors, we have a higher sensitivity to sour and bitter substances likely due to survival needs.

The experiments conducted on the almost 200 children, with a little over half being obese, were tasting tests that determined whether a child could differentiate between the five flavors and explain the intensity at which a flavor was administered.  The study found that obese children, when compared to normal weight children, would have difficulties distinguishing between both intensities and certain flavors.  These flavors were the salty, umami, and bitter tastes.  This study concluded that obese children have taste buds that are less sensitive than that of their normal weight counterparts.

As we begin to better understand childhood obesity, we can more easily attempt to stop it from happening.  Because we believe that these children have less sensitive taste buds and could be a contributing factor of the obesity, scientists could find a way to heighten the sensitivity of the taste buds.  Another solution could be to find foods with very high intensities to satisfy the cravings that these children have.  Ultimately, this will help the individual from suffering from conditions and diseases that the obese are prone to obtaining.

Developing Learning Behaviors in Autism

Autism is a neurological disorder that affects how the brain collects information and organizes it between the synapses in the brain.  Autism can cause severe delays in communication, social interaction, and disabilities in learning information.   Some characteristics of Autism are repetitive behavior, decreased eye contact, unresponsitivity to some emotions, and decreased nonverbal communication. (1)  The diagnosis of autism is on the rise due to the awareness and the age (typically before three years) in which symptoms start becoming recognizable. Since autism is a developmental disorder, a preferred method of treatment is educational curriculum for both family and the individual.

Geraldine Dawson has developed a curriculum to help bridge the learning gap of children with mild autism.  The Early Start Denver Model consists of children who are 18 months old and work with trained counselors twice a day for two hour sessions, five days a week.  Once these individuals received two years of training, their IQ was tested.  Findings showed an average improvement of 17.6 points. This led Dawson to theorize that since there was an improvement in IQ, there must also be an improvement in brain activity.  Dawson selected a group of 48 toddlers with autism who were between the ages of 18 months and three years of age.  The group was divided into 2 controlled groups in which one trained using the ESDM while the other was trained with traditional educational methods. Electroencephalography readings were taken of each group after two years of training.  Most findings report that the brain becomes highly active when looking at a toy versus a human face.  However, individuals who received the ESDM showed exact opposite.  The results closely resembled the brain waves of an individual that is not diagnosed with autism. Autism affects not only the individual but the family as whole.  This curriculum offers hope to improve the learning and recognition factors associated with this developmental disorder.  It also helps the science community to display the plasticity of the brain and how it can be redirected toward normal development.  ESDM can offer an individual with autism a better way to communicate and recognize different individuals, as well as improve their learning capabilities.  Unfortunately, it is not a cure, but a very effective tool to improve the overall lives of families affected.

Interstitial cystitis

Interstitial cystitis can be defined as a condition of the bladder in which symptoms closely reflect those of a typical bladder infection or urinary tract infection.  These symptoms consist of frequent and urgent urination as well as moderate pain/ pressure in the lower pelvic area. (1)  There is no known cure for IC, but there are different treatment methods.  IC varies from patient to patient making it hard to pin point the causes of this diagnosis.  However, physicians have found a common link in stress/hormonal and genetic triggers that can flare up the symptoms of IC.

Treatment methods include adhering to a diet low in acidic foods such as tomato based products, alcohol, chocolate, and caffeine. Others also monitor stress triggers as well as menstrual cycles.  Female patients with IC have reported a decrease significantly in their symptoms while breastfeeding.  Physicians theorize that this is due to a decreased level of stress that is associated with women while breastfeeding.  Thus they are testing whether or not oxytoxin can help relieve the symptoms associated with patients who have IC.  Dr. Meredith Robbing of the University of Birmingham is currently testing 50 patients with an intranasal 40 mg spray of oxytoxin or saline nasal spray as the placebo.  Oxytoxin is typically used to relieve pain but it is also known to help relieve anxiety. (2)

Treatment varies from person to person due to differing stages of I.C., ulcerative or non ulcerative I.C., as well as drug allergies.  Some medication can be directly administered into the bladder, other methods use antihistamines, homeopathic remedies, as well as anti depressants. (1)  Severe cases require surgery in conjunction with physical therapy.  If this treatment proves effective it will be the first methods to treat IC via intranasal.  Not only would it would be a first of its kind, but it would be a solution a more convenient and cost effective treatment of a condition that has no cure.

Plasmapheresis offers short-term relief for Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune, neuromuscular disorder.   Myasthenia gravis causes weakness and/ or fatigue of any voluntary muscle.  Ususally swallowing, facial expression, and movement of eyes are affected by myasthenia gravis.  Long-term treatment is oral medications that include corticosteroids.  When a person is in a myasthenic crises, they may not be able to swallow or have difficulty breathing.  A quick solution must be found to reverse a myasthenic crises or death may quickly occur.

When myasthenia gravis occurs, neuromuscular transmission is disrupted because of decreased receptor numbers.  The decrease of receptors is a result of binding antibodies to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors located on the post-synaptic membrane of the neuromuscular junction.  As many as 30-95% of myasthenia gravis patients are seropositive for immunoglobulin G AChR antibodies.  If a person receives treatment by plasmapheresis and a decrease in the antibody titre occurs, the symptoms will improve and short-term relief is achieved until the plasma antibodies rise again.

(Plasmapheresis is the process of removing the plasma and antibodies from whole blood.  RBC are returned to the body.  The process typically occurs in about an hour and saline is administered to replace the fluids lost through the apheresis process.)

Using plasmapheresis to remedy a life-threatening event such as myasthenic crises makes the process affordable and a reality for those suffering from myasthenia gravis.  The industry of plasmapheresis has so much to offer our evolving biologics research and treatment world through the process itself and through its use in pharmaceuticals.  Many studies are using the immunoglobulins from refracted plasma to build new medication therapies for chronic illnesses.  Plasmapheresis is a popular way to obtain life saving immunoglobulins that can be given in forms of medication or transplanted directly to patients to remedy sickle-cell crises and burns.  Maybe in the future studies and new technology of the apheresis process could include a way to give myasthenia gravis a periodic (daily, weekly) treatment for long-term needs.

Intractable Tourette’s Syndrome shows response to neurosurgery.

Tourette’s Syndrome (TS) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder.  There are no two TS patients with the same set of symptoms that include simple and complex motor and vocal tics.  There are also differences in duration and severity of the tics.  Simple motor tics usually affect only one muscle group and complex motor tics are more abrupt and affect simple movement and coordinated sequences of movement.  Intractable TS patients have many complex motor tics and are found to be harmful to themselves if they are great in severity.

After careful evaluation of TS patients, their outcome of problem severity and resulting impairment, some patients may be candidates for neurosurgical treatment called a bilateral limbic leucotomy.  The surgery entails making lesions in the lower medial quadrants of the frontal lobes in the brain.  One patient showed progress with reduction of symptoms within 2 days of surgery and compulsions disappeared within 6 weeks.  The patient is then no longer a damger to themselves and can live a more normal lifestyle, with much less degree of syndrome symptoms.

With the many neurosurgical advances in the medical world and the new knowledge of the syndrome’s physiology we can see that there are promising outcomes from surgical techniques.  All patients with chronic illnesses need treatment plans with realistic outcomes to meet their basic needs of daily life.  The bilateral limbic leucotomy has now shown that severe Tourette’s symptoms can be alleviated through manipulation of the frontal lobes.  Hopefully this will not be a costly procedure as it evolves to a process performed more often and possibly to help alleviate more minor syndrome patients with further studies.
