Journalistic Privilege

Professional careers are now being threatened by amateurs. The lines between a professional and an amateur are blurred. In terms of Wikipedia vs. the Encyclopedia…I guess the amateurs are the 1’s posting to Wikipedia….and the professionals are the ones contributing to the Encyclopedia. I really can’t tell you what makes one person a “professional” and another an “amateur”. But the rules should be defined….Like with that journalistic privilege thing….. “Who deserves to have this privilege?” Should anyone that does journalist things, like blogging, have access to it?

  1. This is something that we have talked about a lot in journalism department. It’s still unclear who has journalistic privilege and who is covered by state Shield Laws. I definitely do not think that any blogger should have journalistic privilege; that would be absolutely ridiculous and an injustice to those affected by it. But where do you draw the line? I do think that professional journalists who are acting in a professional capacity on a blog should be protected, as I do not think that the medium should determine whether or not someone receives journalistic privilege. Again, this is another reason why I think that professionalism is very important, especially for journalists.

    • Yeah I agree with you…”Professional journalists who are acting in a professional capacity on a blog should be protected”—-> because eye was thinking that if all bloggers had journalistic privilege…things would definitely be crazy. It’s kinda scary to know that the rules are still unclear as 2 who has journalistic privilege—-> I’m with you 100% about the whole professionalism thing.

  2. The whole professionals vs the other guys thing is up in the air when it comes to certain professions, but professionals are still a necessity around the world. I am the other guy when it comes to music for now, but I guess my record deal will make me a professional when it comes, but that is just more dollar signs. Being broke versus getting paid for it maybe the battle taking place now.
