Unfortunately, I was able to come to class today, but I am able to talk about the readings.
I’m not a really big Survivor fan so the readings for it kind of boring, but I did find it very interesting how the contestant are fined for releasing too much information and those TRUE FANS go through so much to get this information– with these blogs writing, using satellite photographs to release.
Also, Convergence Culture hit the nail on the head with American Idol. American Idol was something the world was used to but not all at once.
Yeah, reality shows keep their contestants under lock and key. My cousin went 2 school with Eva Pigford….and this was around the time that she won the America’s Next Top Model competition. The world didn’t know who the winner was yet because the season hadn’t aired…so Eva had to keep frontin like a college student and finish her junior year. By carrying on with her regular college life, people weren’t able to make weird assumptions and spoil the show.
When looking at any of the readings it’s important to remember that these are examples used to illustrate a larger concept, so the point is not so much Survivor per se, but the way that these hard core fans were interacting with the show and with other fans. Can you think of other examples where fans of a show might want to “game the system”?
