Blog # 12

The internet makes it easier for groups to share information and also find other groups with similar interests (Rainie, Purcell and Smith). Another way the internet can benefit groups is that it allows attention to be drawn to a certain issue. The internet also allows groups to have a huge impact on a broader range of people. The internet also makes it easier for people to donate money to groups and also for the groups to keep their funding and events organized without having a filing cabinet full of different paper work. Another benefit the internet has had on groups is that it allows for groups to show their activities and also iniate them. The greatest benefit that I saw from the study was how group members can go online for news and information about their group. The internet is a fast way to let the members know what is going on and also when the next meeting is going to take place. From what I have read, the internet has had all positive effects on groups.

  1. I like your point about the internet making it easier to facilitate fundraising for groups. The internet certainly broadens the reach of fundraising efforts so it would be nice to see Pew expand their student to show individuals that contribute to community efforts in ways other than their time. Specifically, I’m a lot more likely to donate time and money to a cause if another one of my ties posts about the issue.

    • I definitely agree with you wanting to donate more and pay attention to the cause due to the internet. This really helps out certain fundraising campaigns when people become more involved with the activities for the groups. The community efforts are an important in helping out as well.

  2. I have managed to observe a nearly-perfect example of an online group having a major impact on other groups of people, just like mentioned in your blog. A lot of members from Playstation Community have been trying to get 2 specific characters onto a popular fighting game. There are currently over 800 tweets from Twitter about wanting these characters in the game. Activision has sent them notes about it being a “worthwhile effort”. Whether or not this petition will succeed will be answered as time goes by.

  3. Internet groups are able to reach a greater range of people. Since each person has their own network, each person is able to advertise to each of their varying networks and they are able to reach more people. This is super effective when you have to advertise for an event.

  4. As i noticed in my online community I used for SP3, people like the ability to leisurely participate in a informal community which makes online communities more attractive.

  5. You make an excellent point about the ease of donating to charity via the internet. My best friend operates a services that does this for non-profits, and I myself worked for a non-profit that benefitted greatly from this.

  6. I agree with the fundraising campaign and how the internet plays a very important role in helping groups. Donating money and/or time to charities helps organizations know who want to participate and give a lending hand.
