Welcome

My name is Heidi Segona, and I am a full-time Master’s student in the Department of Communication. I am originally from Melbourne, FL  but moved to Knoxville, TN in 1996, and then to Memphis in 2001.  I have an 11 year old son who is amazing and always fun to be around. We also have the cutest 7 month old puppy named Thea.

Last semester I had the pleasure of being a teaching and research assistant for Dr. Gretchen Holmes.  I helped Dr. Holmes with research on the Theoretical Model of Medical Rapport in Medical Students.  I also assisted with 1780 (intro to communication) and taught 2 labs.  This semester our research is dealing with illness narratives and understanding illness.  This research is to help Dr. Holmes write a chapter for an upcoming Health Communication textbook.

I have done research on Computer Mediated Communication in relationships while in undergraduate and graduate classes.  I am very interested about the topic, and the dynamic that CMC plays specifically with long distance and face to face relationships.

I have had a long break like most of you, and I am ready to get to work.  I look forward to interacting with the class.

Good luck this semester!

Heidi

Technology adoption

This chart provides an interesting comparison of the rates that different technologies were adopted in the Unites States. The steeper the line, the more quickly people adopted the technology. Compare the steepness of the lines for the cell phone and the internet with the relatively flat line for (landline) telephone. Why do you think cell phones caught on so much more quickly?
