Blog#2 Hope/Fear About new Technologies and CMC

Reading Chapter 2 and Herrin (2004) the hopes of new technologies were primarily  to make easier avenues for communication for people. In contrast the fears are much higher issues. People fear that the replication and storage of content online is permanent and can be reproduced at a rapid rate. A sense of privacy invasion or lack there of is also a concern on the table. As noted in chapter 2 of our text, there are strong anxieties that stem from the media being interactive, deceiving, and exploiting.

It is evident in the rapid growth and popularity of people adapting to the use of technology and high traffic on the internet the the hopes are evident that the use of computers, tablets, and cellphones will become the ordinary in our society. For most people, it has. The fears about technology are also lurking in the back ground, of these fears the highest are sexual exploitation primarily concerning children and privacy. A lot of debate about being trackable is out there on the internet and is a testimony to the the evolution outlined in Herring (2004) from the first types of messages being text only to the current formats that allow rapid response and even videos (skype, fact time, etc.)

The observations made by Herring “CMC tend to slouch towards the ordinary” is a confirmation that our communications among each other will be over the use of new and advanced technology tools and messaging.

  1. Hello,

I agree with you that ” the use of computers, tablets, and cellphones will become the ordinary in our society.” In fact, as you said , it has for most of people. It is part of our daily rutines. Today, Computers are must have. School start teaching the kids how to use the computer from first grade, and students who have computers at home are more successful because they learn more and improve their skills and all what they learn at school. College students can not live without computers because all the professors are posting quizzes , lectures supplements, homework, presentations, grades…etc online even if the class was oncampus. So, it is important to people to update themselves with whatever new Tech comes to the market to succeed.

  2. I agree that computers, tablets and cellphones has become ordinary for most people because it has become a norm. Child are now able to attend school online starting with elementary which helps to increase isolation ans seclusion. Since technology has become the norm manufactures are making so much money because everyone wants what’s new.

  3. I’ll pile on with the others and agree that I think CMC is tredning toward the ordinary and mundane. I felt that way when my grandma began emailing and texting on a regular basis. Her generation is typically the last to adopt new technology. When they’ve done so, you know they’ve accepted that it’s an ordinary part of our society.

At the dawn of the internet age, there were a ton of rapid developments that superceded the ones before them. Take for intance the pager. That went bye bye as cell phone technology improved. I feel these developments have slowed down immensely in the last five years. To me, that signals that this technology has become ordinary. Now it will be interesting to see the next big thing.

  4. You bring up the exploitation of children as one of the mentioned fears of technology from our readings. Although there are predictors in our society that use CMC as part of their criminal tool belt, I’ve recognized that the police and other justice organizations are using CMC to bring down the same criminals. To pull an example from recent TV history, the show “To Catch A Preditor” made use of instant messaging and online classifieds to entrap criminals and then exposed them on prime time tv. I would be interested to see if criminals are more intimidated to persue crimes committed online since the popularity of shows and news reports like this.

  5. I agree with the statements made in your blog. When Herring said that “CMC will tend to slouch towards the ordinary”, she wasn’t entirely wrong. Communication technology has become an everyday thing for most people around the world. In fact, it has become quite common to overlook certain forms of technology. It’s really easy to do so for some people who want nothing to do with new technology.

  6. Technology has become an ordinary asset in our society. Some have taken advantage of it in the wrong ways, such as the exploitation of children. There are some positives, for example, ourselves. There was a time were online classes did not exist. Those who wanted to further their education, but for some reason or another could not, were not given these opportunity. On the educational side of things we land on hopes, but with that comes fears as well. For everything good there is something bad.
