Student Spotlight: Rickyta Mallett

Rickyta Mamallettllett is a second year Masters student in our department.  She is originally from Greenwood, MS.  She did her undergraduate degree at Mississippi Valley State University where she earned a BA in Sociology and BA in Political Science.

Rickyta’s interests in sociology fall in the areas of socioeconomics, race and class, and social inequality.  When she is not in school Rickyta has an internship with the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank.  Through that internship she has worked on two research projects.  The first explores the economic impact of BBQ restaurants in the Memphis Metropolitan Area and the second analyzes the trends that impact young professionals in the Delta area of the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank’s Memphis Zone.  She is also beginning to work with Dr. Erigha on uncovering the resources Black people depend on for news.

Rickyta will be graduating with her MA this spring.  After graduation she is hoping to secure a full time position where she can continue to do research while she explores her options for the next phase of her educational journey.

In her free time Rickyta enjoys exploring the city of Memphis by engaging in cultural events and eating at Memphis’ best restaurants.  When she’s had enough of the Memphis hustle and bustle she likes to head home to Mississippi to enjoy some quiet time for a weekend escape.
